The area surrounding San Martin de los Andes is home to the most famous trout fishing waters in Patagonia. This area is rich in fly fishing history and culture and was made world renown in the 1960’s by fisherman such as Mel Kreiger and Joe Brooks. Unrivaled dry fly fishing opportunities, crystal clear water and stunning natural beauty make this area an outdoor mecca.
The Alumine, Caleufu, Chimehuin, Collon Cura and Malleo are the five major rivers in the area. Also available are numerous streams, unique spring creeks, and pristine mountain lakes. Combined with all of this we also offer high quality limited access and private water. Let us design your unique fishing itinerary that can include several or all of our fabled waters to your Patagonia experience.
Based on our years of knowledge and experience we offer our guests several lodging options that we believe offer the best value, location and service. For the angler fishing in the fabled waters surrounding San Martin de los Andes we feel Apart del Maiten, Casona del Alto and Spring Creek Lodge are the best choices. Anglers wishing to fish the upper Alumine and Quillen River along with the areas spring creeks are best served by Casa de Campo Lodge. Additionally, to any of these various venues we can always add our Deluxe River Camps. One of the key aspects of traveling with Andes Drifters is the flexibility and ability to combine numerous options into one itinerary.
While you are visiting San Martin de los Andes on your fishing adventure please consider taking advantage of the numerous other activities that are available. From active adventure to lifestyle or just sightseeing the area has a lot to offer. Guided fishing is a large part of what we provide but we can show you so much more. Northern Patagonia has something for everyone making it an excellent location for an individual, family or group holiday.
We recommend a minimum of three days. There is such a large variety of water to fish that you could stay for the entire season and never fish the same water twice. Many of our guests stay for 7 nights and fish for 6 days.
Absolutely. The uniqueness of the San Martin de los Andes area is that there is so much to do in addition to enjoying the fishing. We can combine non-fishing activities before, during or at the conclusion of your fishing adventure. Additionally, we can design a non-fishing itinerary for members of your family or group that don’t share your fishing passion.
Surprisingly many of our first time guests initially show a lack of interest for fishing on one or more of the areas lakes. However, once they experience it firsthand they have a complete change of mind. Besides the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape the lakes we fish are loaded with large brown, rainbow and brook trout. Typically you will be sight casting large dry flies to aggressive fish as they cruise the shoreline looking for food.
