Dorado, the apex predators of the river, will surely keep your adrenaline pumping! The explosion of water when theses highly aggressive fish hit your fly is guaranteed to startle even the most seasoned angler. Great acrobatic leaps out of the water, similar to a tarpon, add to the fun and excitement. In the stretch of river that we fish the Dorado will range from 4 to 30 pounds. However, each season a few lucky anglers hook fish up to 40 pounds.
Our fishing is done from 17 foot skiff style boats that are equipped with 90hp four stroke engines. Remote controlled trolling motors, mounted on the bow, allow the guides to maneuver and stealthily approach the fishing areas. We will primarily fish braided channels, at the head of islands and along deep banks of the main river. Structure such as fallen trees, rocks and cut banks are generally ideal feeding areas for a natural hunter like the Dorado. A mix of streamers, mouse patterns and dry flies, cast with floating lines, are the ideal set-up.
Sight casting lovers will also enjoy the chance to sight fish in the shallow water along the sand bars. We have the ability to transform the skiffs to flats style boats with a rear mounted poling platform and poled by the guide. This technique is similar to approaching tarpon on a saltwater flat in only 2 to 3 feet of water. This is especially exciting when you are targeting 12 to 30 pound fish!.
In addition to Dorado you will also have the opportunity to fish for Pacu, Pirapita, Boga and Pacui. These fish are omnivorous and are fished to using floating lines with steamers, mouse patterns, dry flies and flies that imitate fallen fruit. Having these fish in the same water as the Dorado gives you the opportunity to target several different species on the same trip.
Getting to the lodge is very easy. There are daily, direct flights from Buenos Aires to both Resistencia and Corrientes Airports. Flights to either airport are approximately 1½ hours from Buenos Aires. When you arrive at the airport a representative from the lodge will be waiting to greet you. From there is easy to get to the Lodge only 45 minutes away from Local Corrientes Airport close to Itati town.
We have kept a log over the past seasons to help answer this question. These are the catch rates per angler per week.
Dorado – 15-20 fish between 6 and 15 lbs.
80% caught a 20+ lb fish and of those anglers 50% caught another 2-3 fish were 20+ lbs.
Pira pita – 10-15 fish between 4-10 lbs.
Pacu – 1 -2 fish between 8-20 lbs.
Yes. Dorado, pacu and pira pita all share the same water.
It is actually very close. The boats are docked less than 100 feet from your room. We can begin fishing right in front of the lodge or some days we’ll travel 15-30 minutes. Our goal is to put you on fish while at the same time minimizing running time.
Typically late in the afternoon mosquitoes will make their presence felt. However, a good repellant will take care of the problem. All bedrooms have screened windows and are air-conditioned which helps eliminate their presence in your room.
